Compiz (second take)

As said previously, the best way to get compiz to autostart is by running the application called xfce4-autostart-editor. To do this, do ALT+F2 and run the application from there. Then, add an entry to fusion-icon, that you will have installed previously. That's all. You will get compiz and a controller for it in the tray.

Controlling the fan

My fan is noisy, to turn it off sometimes and until the CPU is too hot, follow these instructions. They are not entirely perfect and you will have to make sure that both the perl script and the bash-based daemon are actually executable by all users (I guess root would be sufficient).

Compiz

To enable compiz, I suggest to follow the instructions at this site. I did not remove the search box, but used the same script for starting the tray icon and compiz every time the system starts. To do this, you need to add the fusion command before the one starting the search box and make sure that it is started in the background by adding an ampersand at the end of the line.

When selecting themes, pay attention that the theme is applied automatically to Xfce when you navigate the list. Also, for me, some of the themes would not work. I navigated until I found something I liked, there are quite a few ones to choose from.

PS: xfce actually have better ways to control startup applications, I haven't tried it yet, but I believe that this would work better.

Getting back wireless after waking up from sleep mode

If you like your Aspire One, you will soon constantly be turning it "on" and "off" by opening and closing the lid. One of the problem that occurs from time to time is that the wireless connection refuses to come back. So far, my solution to this is "hardware": I turn the wireless off and on using the button on the front side. When turned on again, the Aspire finds back the network and reconnects properly.

The power user trick

One of the first things that you should do is to enable the installation of new applications and the such through enabling the backdoor. This has been published elsewhere, so nothing new here. Just apply it and you will be able to install new applications since Linpus really is a Fedora system.

Just don't forget to give the root user a decent password through becoming the superuser "sudo -su" and setting the password via the passwd command.

Brand New

When it is not entirely, but for this blog it is. I have a brand new Aspire One and I will relate here a number of tricks and what I am doing with it.
